Year 1 Phonics Screening Check

How does the test work?
The Phonics Screening Check will assess your child’s progress in phonics by asking them to correctly read and pronounce 40 different words and non-words. These tests will contain words such as fuzz, thin, moon and join… but also a number of non-words such as shork, gemoo, murst and quing.
Non-words are words which don’t actually mean anything but are there to test that your child understands the phonics rules behind them. Each of these words will be accompanied by a picture of an alien or monster whose name it is supposed to be.
